Marrakech in Autumn: The Best Season for the Agafay Desert

By late October, Marrakech slows to a different rhythm. The summer heat has gone, the light turns golden by mid-afternoon and the evening air carries a welcome freshness. For many travellers, this is the best time of year to leave the medina behind and head for the Agafay desert, less than an hour from the Red City.

Quad bike, buggy, camel ride or a slow lunch in our oasis: here is why autumn is the dream season for a desert trip near Marrakech, and how to make the most of it.

Marrakech weather in autumn: mild days, cool evenings

In November, daytime temperatures in Marrakech average around 22°C, with roughly seven hours of sunshine a day. Nights drop to about 10°C. Rain is rare: a few showers on a handful of days across the month, usually gone as quickly as they came.

That changes everything in the desert. There is no need to set off at dawn to beat the heat: you can ride in the middle of the afternoon in comfort, then roll straight into a sunset without overheating under your helmet. On clear days, the dry air gives superb views of the High Atlas, whose peaks wear their snow from December to March, weather permitting.

Good to know: Morocco is back on GMT

Since 20 September 2026, Morocco has permanently dropped GMT+1 and returned to Greenwich Mean Time. In practice, the sun now sets earlier on the clock than it used to: in November it slips behind the Agafay hills in the late afternoon. Keep this in mind when planning your day, especially if you are after a sunset trip.

Why autumn brings out the best in the Agafay desert

Agafay is not a desert of sand dunes but a stone desert: ochre plateaus, rolling hills, dry riverbeds and small Berber villages. In autumn, the low-angled light picks out every ridge and paints the landscape in shades from pink to copper. It is the photographers’ favourite season.

The mild temperatures also mean you can take your time: a break in the shade of the palm trees in our oasis, a glass of tea with the guides, and back out onto the trails.

Sunsets and dinners under the stars

Autumn is made for desert evenings. With an early sunset, you can enjoy the show, sit down to dinner and still be back in Marrakech at a reasonable hour. As night falls, the lanterns glow in the oasis and the Agafay sky, far from the city lights, fills with stars.

On the table, this is the season for warming dishes: a slow-cooked tagine, or harira, the fragrant lentil and chickpea soup Moroccan families make as soon as the weather cools. And of course, a steaming glass of mint tea to round off the night. Back in Marrakech, don’t miss tanjia, the city’s signature dish, traditionally slow-cooked in the embers of a hammam furnace.

What’s on in Marrakech this season

Autumn is also a great time for culture. From 20 to 28 November 2026, Marrakech hosts the 23rd Marrakech International Film Festival, founded in 2001, which draws filmmakers and stars from around the world every year. It is the perfect excuse to pair screenings in town with an adventure day in the desert.

November also has two national holidays: Green March Day on 6 November and Independence Day on 18 November. Many Moroccan families head out on these days, so book your activities ahead if you are travelling then.

Practical tips for an autumn desert trip

  • Dress in layers. A T-shirt in the afternoon, a fleece or warm jacket as soon as the sun goes down: the gap between day and night temperatures is real in the desert.
  • Protect yourself from sun and dust. Sunglasses, sunscreen, closed shoes and a scarf or cheche, especially for quad and buggy rides.
  • Check the sunset time. Now that Morocco is back on GMT, the sun sets earlier than before. Confirm your departure time when you book.
  • Book ahead during the Film Festival and around the national holidays, when demand is higher.
