Quad or Buggy in the Agafay Desert: Which One Should You Choose?

Less than an hour from Marrakech, the Agafay desert rolls out its ochre stone hills facing the peaks of the High Atlas. It is the perfect playground for a motorised adventure, and almost every traveller asks us the same question: quad or buggy?

Since 2007, Dunes & Desert has been sharing Agafay with travellers from all over the world, earning thousands of positive reviews along the way. Our answer is simple: both are fantastic, but they deliver very different sensations. Here is our guide to choosing the adventure that suits you best.

The Agafay desert, adventure on Marrakech’s doorstep

Forget the image of tall sand dunes: Agafay is a stone desert of rocky plateaus, rolling hills and small Berber villages. On a clear day, the view of the snowy High Atlas summits is breathtaking, and the sunsets here are among the most beautiful in Morocco.

Its greatest asset is how close it is. The Sahara dunes are about 9 hours away by road, while Agafay is less than an hour from the medina. You can leave the souks of the Red City in the morning, ride through the desert, and be back in time for a mint tea on a rooftop terrace. The quad bike: thrills and freedom

The quad bike is the choice for riders who love to be in control. You steer with handlebars: the throttle sits under your right thumb and the two brakes work just like on a bicycle. The riding position is sportier, you feel every bump of the trail, and you are fully immersed in the landscape.

Our Yamaha Grizzly and Kymco quads carry two people: the rider at the front and a passenger behind. Nimble and agile, they go everywhere, from palm groves to the rocky ridges of Agafay.

The quad bike is for you if:

  • you are looking for thrills and dynamic riding;
  • you each want to ride your own machine;
  • you prefer a gentler budget: our quad tours start at a more affordable price than the buggy.

The buggy: comfort, power and sharing

A buggy (also called an SSV) drives like a car: a steering wheel, two pedals and two side-by-side seats with seat belts. The roll cage around the cabin is reassuring, and the seated position makes the ride comfortable for everyone.

Our fleet includes CF Moto 1000 Sport and Can-Am Maverick 700 models, powerful machines that handle the Agafay trails with ease. Both occupants can swap the wheel along the way.

The buggy is for you if:

  • you are travelling as a couple or with friends and want to share every moment side by side;
  • you want more comfort and a greater feeling of safety;
  • you are travelling as a family with young children.

Our tips for a great ride

  • Pick your moment. Sunset tours offer the most spectacular light over the Agafay hills; in the morning, the air is cooler and the view of the Atlas is sharper.
  • Dress smart. Covering clothes, closed shoes, sunglasses and a scarf or cheche against the dust.
  • Let us pick you up in Marrakech. We collect you in town. In the medina, where the alleys are too narrow for vehicles, we meet you at the car park closest to your riad.
